The hermit crab is a crustacean known for its habit of using discarded shells of other mollusks for protection. Found in marine and terrestrial habitats worldwide, hermit crabs have soft abdomens and seek out shells that fit their size to retreat into when threatened. They are opportunistic feeders, consuming a variety of foods from algae and small invertebrates to detritus found on the ocean floor or beaches.
